Healthy Forests Initiative - Fact Sheet

Making A Difference
Fremont-Winema National Forests - Oregon

The Ninemile Fuel Reduction Project on the Fremont-Winema National Forests, Chiloquin Ranger District, Klamath County, Oregon will reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health using the new guidance issued by Council on Environmental Quality on environmental assessments. Located near the wildland urban interface communities of Chiloquin and the Sprague River Valley, the treatments will include mechanical thinning, shredding brush, and the use of prescribed fire. Approximately half the treated areas involve commercial timber harvest as part of the fuel reduction efforts. These communities are considered at risk according to the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003. The fuels reduction project, totaling 6,961 acres will be carried out under Title 1 of the HFRA of 2003.

The Forest Service is conducting this project in collaboration with the Klamath Tribes and the Chiloquin/Agency Lake Fire District.

The Oregon Natural Resources Council filed an objection and resolution of this objection must be completed by August 27, 2004. An Objection Review Team will review the 57-page objection the week of August 9. The agency anticipates that the project will be underway before October 1, 2004.
