Treatment Prescriptions and Implementation

Crane in DEMO Study forest. By design, all harvest and postharvest prescriptions were applied consistently among the treatment units within a block. Among blocks, however, methods of harvest, slash treatment, and planting details varied as a function of topography, physical environment, and forest composition and structure. Details on harvest procedures, treatment of down woody material, retention and creation of snags, and reforestation can be found in: Aubry, K.; Amaranthus, M.; Halpern, C.; White, J.; Woodard, B.; Peterson, C.; Legoudakis, C.; Horton, A. 1999. Evaluating the effects of varying levels and patterns of green-tree retention: experimental design of the DEMO study. Northwest Science. 73(Special Issue): 12-26.

Harvests were completed in fall 1997 (3 blocks) and 1998 (3 blocks). Among the eight blocks originally selected, harvest was not implemented at two (Little River and Layng Creek).

Patterns of ground disturbance and slash accumulation among harvest treatments are summarized here. See also: Halpern, C.; McKenzie, D. 2001. Disturbance and post-harvest ground conditions in a structural retention experiment. Forest Ecology and Management. 154: 215-225.
