Single
needle 1/4-3/4 inch long, in two flat rows along branch. Cones small,
3/4-1 inch long, tan hang down ends of branches. Bark furrowed, but
not as deeply as Douglas-fir. |

leader, or growing top, of the trees, always droops over. Western
hemlock grows well in shade, and seedlings often grow on rotting logs
on the forest floor. |
