Single needles 5/8-1 inch long, on all sides of branch, stiff and prickly. Cones 2-3½ inches long, light brown, hang at ends of branches. Bark thin with large, loose scales, often purplish-brown.

Sitka spruce grows only within a few miles of the Pacific Northwest coast, where annual rainfall is high, summers are cool with lots of fog, and winters are mild.
