How to identify

Single needles ¾-1½ inches long, curve upward in two rows along branch; needles are dark green above, silvery white on underside. Cones 3-6 inches, barrel shaped, green to purple, sit upright on upper branches. Bark light gray, smooth, thin; on younger trees, may have resin-filled "blisters."

Interesting facts

Pacific silver fir grows at middle elevations in the mountains. Squirrels like the seeds, and often cut cones from the branches.
