Genetic and Silvicultural Foundations for Management
The Northwest Huckleberry Resource WebpageHuckleberries (several species of Vaccinium) are an increasingly important forest resource in the Pacific Northwest. All of our northwest species produce edible berries some have cultural significance, and one species is an important floral green. Also, huckleberries provide important food and habitat for many species of wildlife. Thus, interest in huckleberries ranges from simply wanting to know where to find them so they can be picked for personal consumption, to wanting to know how to manage forests for higher berry production or wildlife needs. Also, huckleberries can be used as indicator species—species whose presence suggests that the land they grow on possesses certain qualities, such as a particular level of timber productivity. Information about northwest huckleberry ecology and management is scattered in many different locations and formats. We have created this website as a guide to several types of huckleberry information. This webpage is a work in progress—as we become aware of additional resources we will add them to the webpage. Please send us publications or links to add additional information (dpeter@fs.fed.us).
This webpage is focused on the 10 native Pacific
Northwest species of Vaccinium known as huckleberries, blueberries
or bilberries. The scientific names of some of these species have changed
over time and most of them have several common names. We use the names
in the NRCS Plants Data Base. However,
much older information uses other names, so a list of names for each species
(synonyms) can be found by clicking here.
