Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Dynamics Simulator (WFDS)

Validation Studies

Validation of these models is ongoing but far from complete. Please keep this in mind when using the Wildland-Urban Fire Dynamics Simulator (WFDS) to solve for problems outside the current scope of validation. See below for information on the current state of validation.

The current release of WFDS is based on the unofficial release of version 6 of FDS. Validation studies using earlier versions of WFDS have been conducted. The current version of WFDS has also been tested against these cases.

Many validation and verification tests for the models of WFDS component physical processes and their numerical solution, respectively, are routinely conducted. This is discussed in the FDS validation and verification guides.

As work is completed, documents will be added in each of the above areas.

Laboratory Experiments
  1. Crown fire initiation (laboratory)
  2. Spread up slopes (laboratory)
  3. Interaction of a single tree (laboratory) and forest canopy with wind WFDS6, Mueller 2012
  4. Douglas tree burns (large laboratory)
WFDS5 for burning Douglas fir trees (Mell et al., 2009)
Field Experiments
  1. Grassland fires (outdoor ~ 200m x 200m plots)
WFDS4 for grassland fires (Mell et al., 2007)
