Prescribed Fire and Wildfire Tradeoff Model (1994-1996)
This study is being undertaken to determine the level of prescribed fire
treatment necessary to minimize smoke from both wildfire and prescribed
fire. FERA developed and assigned 192 fuel condition classes to the tradeoff
model. The model is complete and runs have been analyzed. Results from
the model runs indicate there is a slight "U" shaped curve and that prescribed
fires are shown to decrease total emissions. This model will be used by
land managers to determine the level of prescribed fire activity and to
present a case for prescribed fire to regulatory agencies.
