Photo Series by Volume
Photo series sites were selected to show a range of fuel and vegetation conditions depending on the ecosystem type. The following table summarizes the main ranges depicted in each photo series.

Volume Photo Series Represented Range(s)
Volume I
(Interior Pacific Northwest)
Mixed-conifer with mortality Down and dead woody material loading and degree of tree mortality.
Western juniper Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) density.
Sagebrush Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) density.
Grassland Total aboveground biomass.
Volume II
(Alaska)
Black spruce Tree size and density.
White spruce Tree size and density and down and dead woody material loadings.

Volume IIa

Mixed oak Down and dead woody material loading.

Volume Va
(Midwest Jack Pine)

Jack pine ecosystems Crown closure.
Volume VI

(Washington, Oregon & California)
Oregon white oak Crown closure.
California deciduous oak Crown closure.
Mixed conifer with shrubs Shrubs coverage.
PNW-GTR-545
(Hawaii)
Grassland Grassland groups based on primary species composition.  Where multiple sites have similar species, they are in order of increasing aboveground vegetation biomass.
Shrubland Total aboveground vegetation biomass.
Woodland Aboveground understory vegetation biomass.
Forest Forest groups based on primary species composition.  Broadleaf-dominated forests are followed by an assortment of conifer-dominated forests including slash pine plantation sites.  Where multiple sites have similar species, they are in order of increasing crown closure.
