Southern Case Study:  Fire Management Planning in Georgia

You are a fire management officer for a forest reserve in south-central Georgia.  As part of your prescribed burn planning, the forest supervisor has requested an assessment of the fuel characteristics and a fire hazard survey in an area of the district near second homes and cabins.

The common fuelbed is a longleaf pine with turkey oak component with some palmetto shrub and wire grass cover.  The site has not been burned for 5 years.  You have already used the Natural Fuel Photo Series Volume VIa (Sand Hill series) to estimate fuel loadings and other characteristics of this site.  Use FCCS as a reporting tool to summarize fuel characteristics of your longleaf pine-turkey oak forest fuelbed and to communicate the potential fire hazard of the site.

Note:  These site photos show the site during leaf-on for turkey oak (left) and a leaf die-back (right).
