This position will contribute to the success of the Fire and Environmental Research Applications Team by providing technical expertise in designing and programming computing technology in support of a fire, fuels, and combustion research group composed of university faculty and researchers, scientists from cooperating agencies and contractors. The position requires independent planning, prioritizing, and execution of projects and tasks under the general direction of an SFR faculty member and a FERA scientist representing the interests of the FERA group. The position will develop solutions for the efficient use of computing technologies within individual research projects and optimize resources shared among several research groups. The position involves managing a project to integrate fire and fuels management tools which have been developed by the research group into a common user interface.

• Takes primary responsibility for all phases of software development of data analysis packages that will be deployed on multiple platforms or via web-based technologies. (35%)
• Project management and interface with research scientists, federal cooperators, and contractors. (30%)
• Develops and modifies software to meet the needs, objectives and specifications defined by others. (10%)
• Troubleshoots operational problems and ensures system efficiency and integrity. (5%)
• Writes internal/technical documentation of computer operating systems and system level software. (5%)
• Prepares test data; tests and debugs software systems. (5%)
• Provides technical assistance and support to specialized and diverse user groups in the use of system level software. (5%)
• Maintains and documents projects as necessary. (5%)

Requirements:

• B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, or related field
• Minimum 2 years' experience with software using object-oriented programming, such as Java and C++, and object-oriented design, including UML diagramming and documentation.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Experience with xml and xsl file formats
• Experience with Unix and Windows OS
• Proficiency in writing shell scripts (e.g., Perl, Python, UNIX shell)
• Web services and applications
• Software design and architecture
• Ability to communicate effectively with research scientists.
• Sincere interest in learning about natural resource management applications and fire science.

Desired:

• IT/networking/hardware maintenance
• Master of Science in computer sciences
• Experience working collaboratively with research scientists
• Familiarity with Java Web Services
