Mission: To provide an understanding of the role and value of natural resource systems for recreation and tourism services, and the impacts of these uses upon natural systems.

ABOUT US

[Photograph]: This is a small Alaska town on the water where tourism has a large impact. The Recreation and Tourism Issue is one of the five current issues of focus for the PNW Research Station's Focused Science Delivery Program. This issue focuses on providing recreation and tourism managers in the public and private sectors with an improved basis of understanding about recreation and tourism uses and their relationship with other land management activities and programs.

RESEARCH AREAS

Recreation and tourism are important uses of lands administered by the federal government, and with the urbanization of the West they continue to gain in importance. The Recreation and Tourism Issue is producing products in this area that target two subproblems:

[Photograph]: People are hiking on a trail on the Mount Hood National Forest.(1) What people do when they use public lands; and
(2) The economic benefits associated with recreation.

Both Region 6 and the national recreation staff for the National Forest System are partners in this work and will use the products it generates during the next round of forest planning.

The Recreation and Tourism Issue seeks to:

arrow Provide an efficient and rapid means of making the best knowledge available to management.

arrow Provide a foundation for defining priority research needed to supplement or improve existing knowledge required for effective management of recreation and tourism in natural resource settings.

arrow Assess alternative strategies to enhance organizational capacity to manage recreation and tourism use consistent with the best available knowledge and management frameworks.

arrow Identify some critical forestry concerns about the relationship of various forest management practices and regimes to an array of opportunities for recreation and tourism.
