Forest Service 2003 Success Stories

Success Stories: Kraft Springs Fire Hazard Abatement and Restoration Project

The Sioux Ranger District has worked with TEAMS on two projects during 2002. These projects include North Long Pines and Kraft Springs Fire Hazard Abatement and Restoration. In both situations the performance of TEAMS has been above satisfactory. In particular, TEAMS strong points are:

  • Willingness from resource specialists to resolve issues/concerns
  • Resolve issues/concerns in a timely manner
  • Maintain productive working relationship with district
  • Provide good recommendations
  • Maintain excellent lines of communication with district
  • Keeps the district informed of problems and emerging issues concerning project NEPA

TEAMS, the Forest Service Enterprise that guided the Lone Pine Timber Sale NEPA process, was ready to submit the draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for internal Custer National Forest review. But, ironically, a wildfire burned through the project area, devastating a total of 65,000 acres.

The Custer National Forest now needed to reduce the long-term fuels hazard of these dead and dying trees killed by the Kraft Springs Fire in August 2002. Attempting to expedite the NEPA process for this salvage EA, District Ranger George Foley reviewed his options of district staff and contractors. TEAMS was the feasible choice, dedicating the same specialists already familiar with the area and issues. The Custer National Forest contracted with TEAMS in October 2002 for an interdisciplinary team to complete the EA for this abatement and restoration project. TEAMS completed the EA in February, 2003, and the Forest signed the Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact on March 28, 2003.

The success for TEAMS as with other Forest Service Enterprises is that they provide the Forest Service with crucial services, enabling the agency to meet its targets and resource needs that otherwise would have been difficult to accomplish.
