Forest Service 2003 Success Stories
Success Stories: Delisting of Robbins’ CinquefoilThe US Fish and Wildlife Service delisted Robbins' cinquefoil ( Potentilla robbinsiana ), a rare plant restricted to a small area in the high mountains of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. The recovery of this tiny alpine wildflower was made possible by the cooperation of the USDA Forest Service and several partners including the USDI Fish and Wildlife Service, the state of New Hampshire , the Appalachian Mountain Club, and the New England Wildflower Society. Together, these organizations conducted extensive monitoring of Robbins' cinquefoil populations and created two new populations in the White Mountains National Forest to ensure the survival of this rare plant. Participants in the Robbins' cinquefoil recovery project have said their work proves that "recreation use and alpine plants can coexist." The partners have agreed to continue their monitoring efforts for the next five years.
