Outdoor Recreation in American Life: A National Assessment of Demand and Supply Trends

A document supporting the 2000 USDA Forest Service RPA Assessment

This book contains the results of the most recent national assessment of outdoor recreation and wilderness. The chapters of the book:

Provide a history of recreation and wilderness and describe the benefits associated with outdoor recreation.

Inventory and describe trends in the availability of the land and water resources of the U.S. for outdoor recreation use, both publicly and privately owned.

Examine the availability of private rural lands for outdoor recreation and the conditions under which access is permitted.

Describe recent trends and current participation in outdoor recreation by region and across social groups.

Forecast future participation trends under widely accepted assumptions about future population growth, changes in population makeup, and shifts in the availability of recreation opportunities.

Describe recent trends, the current situation, and likely future wilderness system designations, uses, and values.

Describe the public’s perceptions and evaluations of recreation opportunities in the U.S.

Interpret the implications of resource availability, demand, and other trends for future resources management, policy, and research.

Include special articles about the current management of the National Wilderness Preservation System and perspectives from user groups, industry, and non-government organizations on outdoor recreation.
