Private Forest Investment And Softwood Production In The U.S. South

A supporting technical document for the 1993 Update of the 1989 RPA Assessment

This report presents the results of further analyses of prospects for the future area of pine plantations in the South. The future timber demandsupply outlook is by necessity based on many assumptions. A key assumption in the U.S. outlook for softwoods is the area of pine plantations in the U.S. South. For the 1989 RPA Assessment, the area of pine plantations was projected to about double to 45 million acres in 2040. All of the projected increases in softwood harvest are to come from these lands.

Highlights of the report include the following:

Continued expansion of planted pine area is consistent with the historical investment behavior of the private sector in the South.
Projections of planted pine area on other private lands are very similar to previous assessment projections.
Projections of planted pine area on industry lands, with inputs held constantconsistent with the past 1015 yearsare somewhat lower than previous projections. However, with a moderate rate of expansion, consistent with the longterm history of investment, projections show increases very similar to the findings in the 1989 RPA Assessment.
