Gearhart Mountain Wilderness
Solitude, remote, primitive recreation (7500' above sea level)
Gearhart Mountain offers spectacular all around views.
Area is 22,823 acres.
Considerations:
- Recommended maximum size for groups is 10 heartbeats (people + animals).
- Check at Ranger Station for fire restrictions.
- Maps and other information available at trailhead bulletin boards.
- 17 miles of trail open to hiking and horseback riding.
- Garbage...Burn what you can and Pack out what you can't.
- No maintained water systems; boil all water taken from open sources.
- Come prepared for cold weather.
- Bring a first-aid kit.
- Pack or saddle animals are not permitted within 200 feet of Blue Lake,
or any stream. (Except for watering, loading, unloading, or
traveling on established trail routes. Forage is limited, so it
is advisable to carry feed.)
- Wilderness closed to motorized or mechanized vehicles.
Activities:
- Rock formations cap most of the high elevation ridgetops.
- Blue Lake (photo 88k) is a secluded spot in the Wilderness.
- Lodgepole Pine and mixed Ponderosa Pine and White Fir forests dominate
the landscape at the lower elevations.
- Streams rush through narrow meadows within the forests.

- Trails open for hiking or horseback riding.

Recommended Season:
Trails maintained from mid June through September.
How to get there:
From Bly Ranger District Office:
Go 13 miles east on Highway 140, and turn left on Forest Road 3660.
Take Forest Road 3660 for 13 miles, then turn right on Forest Road
34. Go on Forest Road 34 a very short distance and turn left on
Forest Road 012. Go past Corral Creek Campground and you should see
the trailhead sign.
From Bly, head east on Highway 140 for ½ mile to the Campbell Road,
you should see the sign. Turn left onto the Campbell Road and go for
½ mile to Forest Road 34. Turn right and drive 19 miles to Forest
Road 3372. Turn left on 3372 and go about 8 miles. Watch for the "Gearhart Wilderness" sign. Go left onto Forest Road 015 and go for 2
miles.
