If you're a birdwatcher, May is the time to visit the Copper River Delta! Spring migration reaches its peak during the first two weeks of May. In 1993, approximately 1,200,000 shorebirds were observed in one day along 75 miles of Copper River Delta habitat. Two species predominate, with dunlin and western sandpiper making up as much as 98 % of the flocks. However over 30 shorebird species have been recorded on the Copper River Delta. Among the common shorebirds are black-bellied plover, American golden-plover, greater and lesser yellowlegs, whimbrel, black turnstone, surfbird, sanderling; spotted, least, and pectoral sandpipers; short-billed and long-billed dowitchers, common snipe, and red-necked phalarope.
In addition, a patient birder in appropriate habitats usually will be rewarded by solitary, semipalmated, and Baird's sandpipers, Hudsonian and marbled godwits, as well as wandering tattler, red knot, and ruddy turnstone. Bartailed godwit, Bristle-thighed Curlew, and White-rumped and stilt sandpipers have appeared on occasion, and a number of Asian shorebirds are infrequent visitors.
