Hunting

Hunting is a popular recreation activity at Midewin and can be a valuable management tool for helping control populations of some species.

Hunting at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is available on all lands open to the public.  The Midewin Special Hunt Area Rules ensure a successful recreational experience for all.

The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is a federal facility.  State hunting laws as outlined in the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations are enforced at Midewin with the additions specified in the Special Hunt Area Rules.

Special Hunt Area rules have been developed for all hunting at Midewin consistent with U.S. Forest Service policies and guidelines for recreation and public access.  Other supplemental and short-term policies have also been developed because the Army continues to clean up contamination within Midewin’s boundaries and because the Prairie is undergoing restoration to native habitats.  All of these conditions combine to provide a unique recreational experience at Midewin for all visitors.

TURKEY HUNTING

A few wild turkeys were released on the Joliet Arsenal in 1991, but they apparently didn't prosper.  In 1995, the Arsenal was stocked again, this time with four male gobblers and 10 hens.  The turkeys came from the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.  Turkey hunting began in Will County and at Midewin in 2002.
