Visitor Center - Recreation Q & A

Q: Which campgrounds are open?
A:
Contact a specific district office for more information. Most campsites operate on a first-come first-serve basis. Some of the most popular campgrounds and group sites are reservable online.

Q: Do I have to pay fees to use rec sites?
A:
Campgrounds usually have some type of overnight use fee, ranging from $5 to $10 depending on the site. Check the campground guide for more information. These fees are used to maintain and improved the sites.

Q: I heard there are lookouts and cabins for rent. What are the details on that?
A:
Our cabin and lookout rentals offer great recreation experiences and are extremely popular. Visit our Cabin and Lookout Rental Information page for general information about our cabin and lookout rental facilities. Our cabin and lookout map shows where the facilities are located and our cabin and lookout listing provides details on each of the facilities.

Q: When do hunting and fishing seasons start?
A:
Check with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. For more information, go to the Fish & Game website.

Q: Where can I go skiing in North Idaho?
A:
Schweitzer, Silver Mountain, Lookout Pass, and Mt. Spokane all offer Rocky Mountain powder downhill skiing and snowboarding. The Forest Service maintains a cross-country ski area, 4th of July Pass, which is near the Mullan Road Historic Site.

Q: How many people visit the forest annually?
A:
In 1997 more than 4.5 million people visited for recreation alone.

Q: Are there bears in North Idaho?
A:
Yes. You must practice bear safety when camping, picnicking, or hiking in the woods.

Q: What is "Pack it In - Pack it Out?"
A:
Pack it In - Pack it Out means that garbage cans are not provided. Campers and hikers are asked to bring their own garbage bags, and take their garbage with them when leaving the area. While this seems an inconvenience, the funds saved are used to provide additional recreational facilities.

Q: Where do these questions come from?
A:
We get them from you! So go ahead... ask a question! Common questions are posted here.
