on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

#1 was the first timber sale in the nation. Two trees are
cut down from the Case 1 timber area and are taken to a musuem
for historic sawsmills.

Windy Tornado near Cook
Lake, WY

Description: Forest
Service officials cautioned the public to be extra cautious
traveling in the Cook Lake, WY, area, recently hit by a tornado,
and to not cut firewood from the broken trees.
Description: Several
tribal youth are working with the Black Hills National Forest
and National Park Service on a wide variety of natural resource
projects this summer.
Description:The
Black Hills National Forest has thousands of tons of wood
that must either be burned or used for some good purpose,
like making formula one race car fuel.
Description:The
Pack mule string team is part of Forest Service history and
this history is being kept alive today. The Rocky Mountain
Specialty Pack String, based out of Shawnee, Colorado worked
in the Black Elk Wilderness area for two weeks.
Description:The
Sundance Hazardous Fuels Reduction Plan has multiple units
identified for prescribed fire. Project size is estimated
at 1359 acres and the primary objective of this burn is fuels
reduction for public and firefighter safety and improved forest
health.

Clean Up Centennial Trail

ORA Member Spreads Gravel on Trail
Description:The
Off–Road Riders Association (ORA) volunteered with the
Black Hills National Forest last Saturday to repair a damaged
area of the motorized section of the Centennial Trail. The
trail damage was caused by heavy precipitation and excessive
off-road travel.
Description: Aerial
photography taken from a helicopter in the Black Hills National
Forest Sunday and Monday, August 19 and 20, 2007 shows the
devastating march of beetles across many areas of the Black
Hills. Particularly hard hit areas include upper Spring Creek
near the Medicine Mountain Boy Scout Camp, the entire forested
area around Harney Peak, the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve, parts
of Custer State Park, and a large area around Deerfield Lake.
Ponderosa pine forests that have been thinned, prescribed
burned, and logged are shaking off worsening pine beetle attacks
and increasingly difficult wildfires, officials say.

Lakota Reburial Ceremony in the Black
Hills National Forest
Description: On
May 15, 2007 the remains of four tribal ancestors were reburied
in the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota during
a Lakota Ceremony.
Rev. Robert Two Bulls, a retired Episcopal
priest, laid the remains to rest at a spot chosen by a Lakota
spiritual leader. The four people, including two young girls
and an adult male, are about 150 to 200 years old.
At one point, the remains of one of the girls
was on public display. Her bones were sitting in museums and
other collections until Donovin Sprague of First Nations Heritage
Association stepped in to repatriate them.
Description: The
Nursery maintains 46 acres of irrigated seedbeds, along with
a controlled environment greenhouse. The Nursery also maintains
the U.S. Forest Service's Region 2 Seed Bank. The Nursery
extracts, cleans, and stores seed obtained from cones and
berries supplied by its customers. The seed is used to grow
seedlings for customers requesting seedlings or shipped to
customers who want to directly sow the seed.

May 16, 2007, Donovin Sprague, Director of Learning at Crazy
Horse Memorial and Executive Director of First Nations Heritage
Association presented to the Black Hills National Forest Advisory
Board in Rapid City, South Dakota a presentation titled “Paha
Sapa” – American Indian Use of the Black Hills.
Description: The
Black Hills National Forest and its campground concessionaire,
Forest Recreation Management, Inc. (FRM) held their second
annual "Experience the Outdoors" (ETO) day at the
Horsethief Lake campground. Approximately 60 to 80 developmentally
disabled adults attended as guests of FRM and the Forest Service
at an event held to highlight the outdoor opportunities that
can be found throughout the Black Hills National Forest.
Description: In
2005, The Black Hills National Forest Mystic Ranger District
held a clean-up for the Beretta Road area of the forest. Over
a hundred volunteers showed up for the community service project.
Volunteers included environmental groups, shooting enthusiast,
and off-highway vehicle organizations.

Description: 100 percent
contained. The mop-up work went well and crews made excellent
progress in the rehabilitation of the fireline. Several resources
are demobing (being released) today with the remaining resources
demobing on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, command of the fire
will be turned back over to the Black Hill National Forest to
continue monitoring the fire.

Forest Engineers Respond To Hurricane Relief Request

across the country have answered the call to help North Carolina
restore its National Forest facilities, trails, and roads in
the Appalachian Mountains.

SD based 20-person Tatanka Hot Shot fire crew have thinned trees
to improve a view of Mount Rushmore from Iron Mountain road.
The Tatanka Hot Shot crew is using this time to prepare for
another busy fire season.

Spring site contains material spanning 8,000 years of human
occupation in the northern Black Hills of Wyoming. This project
is a long-term archaeological research partnership with the
University of Wyoming and the Forest Service "Passport
In Time" program.

Location: Boulder Canyon south of Highway 14A, approximately
5 miles east of Deadwood, South Dakota.
Description: 3D mapping
technology is allowing the Black Hills National Forest to view
the forest from any angle. The pictures could be used to assist
firefighters to get a better perspective of the lay of the land.

days of discussion. Topics brought to the table included adopting
a Forest Service sacred sites policy and establishing a tribal
leaders advisory council.
