The USDA Forest Service brought Amanda
her family to Washington, D.C. for Earth Day, as her grand prize.
Amanda received an award from the Chief of the Forest Service, and
letters of congratulation from the National Association of State Foresters
and the Garden Clubs in a reception in Forest Service Offices. She
and her younger brother Tommy appeared on stage with Bill Nye, The
Science Guy and Woodsy Owl in the televised Earth Day Rally in D.C.
They also had their pictures taken with Vice President Gore.

and her brother Tommy Cunningham, First Place: First Grade Winner
at the National Earth Day Rally, April 22, 2000. |
Judges liked Amanda's poster because it
communicated Woodsy's "Lend a Hand, Care for the Land" message, it
showed kids how to do that, and it emphasized that conservation is
equally important in city and rural environments - places where both
the Forest Service and State Foresters work. Its not too early to
begin planning your poster for next year... and you might win a trip
to Washington, D.C. like Amanda!
