Elementary Education (k-5)
Kokanee Salmon Conservation Education Program
South Lake Tahoe, California
October
Frequency: Annual
(please include target audience, costs to participants, and program plans):
This program for third and fourth grade students revolves around the annual salmon spawn. The program educates students about the life cycle of the salmon. A presentation with props explain what the student are about to witness. The students then follow the Rainbow Trail along the river and see thousands of fish. Next they visit the stream profile room below ground, where they get a fish's eye view of the action. They can observe nest building, eggs, and predators. The program takes about an hour. It has been around since the 1960's, and modified in the 1980's, so it has been tried, tested, and met with much satisfaction.
