Firewood gathering from designated piles along the west side of the North
Fork road between Big Creek and the Camas Road has been authorized by the
Glacier View Ranger District. Paula Peterson, a resource assistant for the
district, said the public could commence firewood gathering on Tuesday, September
2.
The firewood may be taken only from designated piles stacked along the west
side of the North Fork road. Firewood cutters must adhere to "hoot owl"
operations since the forest still is in Stage Il restriction, said Peterson.
The wood piles accrued following salvage logging in the Moose Fire area.
District officials also stressed that firewood permits are a pre-requisite
for cutting and removing firewood from National Forest lands. Firewood permits
are $5 per cord with a two-cord minimum and a limit of 10 cords per person.
Permits can be obtained from the Flathead National Forest Supervisor's office,
or any of the ranger district offices in Hungry Horse, Whitefish or Bigfork.
There also are a number of private vendors in the Flathead area who can sell
firewood permits. Names of the vendors can be obtained by calling the Glacier
View District at 387-3800.
Peterson stressed that the west side of the North Fork Road was open only
for a few miles from Big Creek to Camas Road, and then only at the designated
wood piles. Other portions of the west side of the North Fork road remain
closed to public use, Peterson said.
