Fort Lapwai 1862-1885

It was here that General Oliver Otis Howard met with the leaders of Nez Perce non- treaty bands on May 3, 1877, as they made one last attempt to remain on their land.

The remnants of Fort Lapwai are situated near U.S. Highway 95 in Lapwai, Idaho. The parade grounds of the fort are the foreground of the picture below.

The U.S. set up an agency to oversee the terms of the treaties with the Nez Perce. The agency was originally located in the small cabin located at Spalding. It was later relocated in 1904 to the site of Fort Lapwai.
