WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2011 -- Three members of the U.S. Forest Service received certificates of merit in a ceremony at USDA headquarters Thursday, Jan. 20, for their leadership and contributions in assisting other federal agencies with their renewable fuels programs.

Lew McCreery, Julie Tucker and Dave Atkins received the certificates their efforts with the Farm Services Agency’s biomass projects and for providing expertise and guidance to the EPA on certain air-emissions regulations.

“This is just one example of how America’s federal agencies are cooperating to leverage taxpayer dollars for the future,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “These federal employees reached across traditional agency boundaries and shared their expertise for the greater good.”

The FSA provides a subsidy to farmers for providing biomass for energy, but much of the biomass they provide comes from trees and brush on their land. The Forest Service technical experts helped them deal with the woody biomass resulting from the subsidy.

The Forest Service manages approximately 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands. For more information, visit: www.fs.fed.us.
