2010 Fire Season Outlook
Vast tracts of the nation’s forested landscapes are in poor or declining health. Throughout the West, a legacy of fire exclusion has left forests overstocked and full of hazardous fuels. Many areas are besieged by drought, insect infestations, and disease. These forests are especially vulnerable to large, severe wildfires that pose significant environmental, safety, and health risks. Public understanding of current wildland conditions, community risks, and interagency capability to respond are critical to a successful 2010 fire season and successful implementation of a cohesive wildfire management strategy based on partnerships and cooperation across boundaries and jurisdictions. The inter-Department-level rollout of 2010 fire season messages in key media markets is designed to generate support for and understanding of the agencies’ roles in a national strategy and response to wildland fire.
