WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2001 -- United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth announced the appointment of Mary Sally Matiella as the agency's chief financial officer.

"I am pleased to have Mary Sally's expertise in this position," said Bosworth. "She brings with her a broad accounting background, an invaluable asset."

Mary Sally comes from the Department of Defense Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) where she developed and implemented department-wide accounting policy and standards for almost three years. Throughout her career, she has held a variety of positions in financial management, such as accounting, budgeting and auditing. Matiella has worked as a systems accountant in a number of defense installations over her 21-year career.

"I am honored and thrilled to accept this position. I see this as an opportunity to further serve my country. I am totally dedicated to advancing the mission of the Forest Service, "Caring for the land and serving the people."

Matiella is a certified public accountant, certified government financial manager and a certified defense financial manager. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in education and a master's degree in business administration, both from the University of Arizona.

Her husband, Frank, is a retired Air Force officer, her daughter Alejandra is a recent graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles and her son Francisco is a sophomore at the College of William and Mary.
