RISBRUDT NAMED DIRECTOR OF FOREST SERVICE STRATEGIC PLANNING

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4, 2001 -- USDA Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck today named Chris Risbrudt director of Strategic Planning and Resource Assessment. Risbrudt replaces Kathryn P. Maloney who has been named as director of the Northeastern Area, State and Private Forestry. Risbrudt, currently the agency’s director of Ecosystem Management, will assume his new responsibilities in early 2001.

Risbrudt will manage the Forest Service’s long-term planning and policy formulation. His responsibilities will include preparation of the Forest Service national strategic plan, assisting the preparation of the agency’s annual performance plan, program evaluation coordination and Forest Service resource assessment.

“I look forward to the challenges involved in planning for the future,” said Risbrudt, “It is gratifying and humbling to know that I will lead a dedicated, experienced staff in laying the groundwork for Forest Service programs for years to come.”

“Chris brings to strategic planning an outstanding combination of experience in the field and at headquarters,” said Dombeck. “I look forward to working with Chris in his new position.”

Risbrudt has been with the Forest Service since 1978. Prior to his assignment as director of Ecosystem Management in April 1995, he was deputy regional forester in the Forest Service’s Northern Region headquartered in Missoula, Mont. Two of his previous assignments were also in Washington, D.C., as director of Policy Analysis from 1985 to 1988, and as an economist with the State and Private Forestry staff from 1980 to 1983. In between, he served as a research project leader at the Forest Service’s North Central Forest Experiment Station, St. Paul, Minn. Risbrudt joined the Forest Service in 1978 as a research forester at the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis.

Risbrudt holds a doctorate degree in forest economics and a master’s degree in forest administration, both from Michigan State University. He served in the Peace Corps in Morocco from 1972 to 1974 in forest planning. He is a native of Minnesota.
