Dixie National Forest NEPA Projects

Projects are proposed actions that are analyzed through the NEPA process (EIS, EA, or CE) that involves analyzing different alternatives to the proposed action, requires public notice and comment, and results in a NEPA decision (ROD, DN, or DM) which, subject to an administrative appeals process, and is implemented on the ground. The Forest Projects below are projects that we are analyzing or have analyzed under the NEPA process. Projects that are "Developing Proposal" or "Under Analysis" may have an opportunity for public collaboration and input on the proposed actions and the analysis being conducted.

Developing Proposal

Citation Oil Special Use Permit Reissue

A Special Use Permit to Citation Oil for the maintenance and operation of an oil pipeline and telephone line across National Forest System Lands is expired and needs to be analyzed for the purpose of issuing a new Special Use Permit.

Mitchell Springs Vegetation Improvement Project

Improve forest health by removing dead/dying Douglas fir and restore aspen and ponderosa pine stands. Restore and invigorate riparian vegetation along Hall Creek.

Sawyer Point Vegetation Treatment

Vegetation treatments to improve habitat and veg conditions.

Under Analysis

East Zone Minerals Source Sites

The Escalante and Powell ranger districts propose to analyze the expansion and development of mineral material pits to respond to mineral material needs of the Forest for the next 15-20 years. The project is consistent with 36 CFR 2850.2 and .3(2).

Johns Valley Vegetation Project

The Dixie National Forest proposes to remove Pinyon and Juniper (PJ) from sage-steppe and riparian areas within Johns Valley to benefit wildlife and improve the environmental health of the area. A variety of treatments would be utilized.

Reed Valley Vegetation Treatment

Conifer salvage harvest 1,428 acres, precommercial conifer thinning 1,404 acres, aspen regen and improvement 759 acres, permanent road relocation 1.03 miles.

Shingle Fire Salvage and Restoration

Within the 7,596-acre Shingle Fire area, the following activitiesare proposed: salvage logging (1085 ac), soil stabilization/site prep/reforestation (6,351 ac.),

South Central Red Canyon Fiber Optic Amendment

Enhance the reliability of an existing fiber optic line under special use permit to South Central Utah Telephone Association, Inc. by amending the permit to allow them to relocate and maintain the fiber optic line outside of Red Canyon Wash.

Upper Valley Landscape Improvement Project

The project would use prescribed fire and mechanical and hand vegetation treatments to reduce wildfire hazard and improve forest health. It would also stabilize and restore streams and provide guzzlers for wildlife.

Blue Fly Vegetation Management Project

The Powell Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest proposes a vegetation management project on the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah.

Harris Flat OHV Trail

Construction of 0.4 mile of ATV trail on existing utility route. New route will provide access from private lands to National Forest roads and trails.

Iron Springs Vegetation Improvement and Salvage Project

Commercial and non-commercial thinning to reduce stand densities, provide for a more balance age-class distribution, and perpetuate aspen presence within the spruce/fir dominated forest.

New Harmony-Central Fuelbreak Improvement

Improvement of existing fuelbreak around communities of Central and New Harmony, UT. Activities include removal of invading woody speies (primarily juniper),widening, seeding and construction of 12-18" fireline.

Paunsaugunt Vegetation Management

The Powell Ranger District proposes a project on the Paunsaugunt Plateau to perform the following vegetation treatments: commercially harvest 866 acres of mixed conifer forest, regenerate 413 acres of aspen, reforest 194 acres of wildfire impacted lands, and pre-commercially thin 285 acres of mixed conifer forest.

Sigurd to Red Butte 345 kV Transmission Line

Construct a new 345 kV transmission line connecting the Sigurd substation located near Richfield, UT to the Red Butte substation located near Central, UT.

Strawberry Ridge Utility Improvement Project

Construction of 350,000 gallon culinary water tank and associated pipeline for adjacent subdivision.
