Ecological and Economic Sustainability of the Appalachian Forest
in and Era of Globalization
Welcome to the Forestry Sciences Laboratory
Research Work Unit NRS-01
Located in the heart of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in West
Virginia, the Forestry Sciences Laboratory conducts research on Appalachian
forest economics, utilization, management, soils, and wildlife. We
also manage the Fernow
Experimental Forest for long-term silvicultural, hydrologic, and
ecological research.
Our mission is to develop timely and relevant new knowledge and provide
management guidelines to sustain the ecological and economic qualities
of Appalachian forests, in the context of changing environments and
human values.
The Forestry Sciences Laboratory is one of several field locations
of the USDA Forest Service's Northeastern Research Station, which
is headquartered in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Our
research work unit (Northern Rearch Station-01) exist in two locations
within the state of West Virginia: Princeton and Parsons.
