Plans are shaping up for the second meeting of the new IUFRO working unit (7.03.12) on Invasive Species in International Trade, May 26-30, in Shepherdstown, WV, USA. This conference covers all taxa, with the focus on pathways and mitigations to prevent the spread of invasive species. A field trip is planned as part of the meeting.
Proposed oral sessions include:
If you would like to present either an oral or poster presentation at the conference, please send your title and abstract to Kerry Britton (kbritton01@fs.fed.us) by April 1, 2008. When preparing your abstract, please follow the abstract author’s guide.
Participants must register by April 1, 2008 in order to stay at the National Conservation Training Center where the meeting will be held; alternative hotels are miles away. Reservations at the Center are “controlled”, so you must be on the registration list we submit to the Center, in order to reserve a room. Information on how to reserve a room will be sent in early April to all who register. Registration forms can be downloaded by clicking here.
The conference center is approximately an hour drive west of Washington, DC. The closest airport is Washington-Dulles International (IAD), from which shuttle service is available Monday & Friday only($70 round trip OR one-way!). Baltimore (BWI) and Washington National (DCA) airports are both about 1 hr drive from the center. General information on logistics (but not about our particular meeting) can be found at the conference center website: http://training.fws.gov
Persons needing any disability-related accommodation to participate in this event should contact Kerry Britton by April 1, 2008.
In addition, we are investigating the possibility of offering two half-day pre-conference workshops (May 26). One workshop would offer hands-on practice using pest interception databases to identify weakness in phytosanitary systems (taught by Allan Auclair - USDA- Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service). The second workshop would focus on the uses of HACCP - a system of monitoring critical control points - to reduce the risk of spreading invasive species (taught by Jeffrey Herod - US Fish & Wildlife Service). Attending these workshops would necessitate arriving a day early - i.e., on Sunday May 25. Cost of the additional workshops would depend upon the number of participants, but should be less than $25 USD, plus an extra day lodging & meals ($110). Please indicate your interest in attending the pre-conference workshops by email to: kbritton01@fs.fed.us
