Abstract

During 1999-2000, the fifth inventory of West Virginia’s forest resources was conducted by the Forest Inventory and Analysis unit of the USDA Forest Service’s Northeastern Research Station. The survey included a subsample within the Monongahela National Forest (MNF). The results showed that the MNF contains 899,000 acres of forest land, or 7.5 percent of the State’s total forest land. Mature forests dominate the landscape within the MNF, timber quality is high, and average annual growth to removals is positive—a ratio of 3.6 to 1. Species composition on the Forest differs from that of the State as a whole. For example, nearly 80 percent of the volume of red spruce in West Virginia grows on the Monongahela.
