Attractions

Historic Sites

Brandywine Battlefield Park — Site of the largest engagement of the Revolutionary War, fought on September 11, 1777 between the Continental Army led by General George Washington and the British forces headed by General William Howe.

Valley Forge National Historical Park — Where George Washington wintered for six months with his Continental Army in their ennobling battle against nature, low supplies, and poor morale. From here, Washington began his historic Christmas Eve crossing of the Delaware River to attack the Hessians at Trenton, NJ.

Museums

Brandywine River Museum — Located in a 19th-century grist mill, the Brandywine River Museum features regional and American art emphasizing the art history, landscapes, still life painting, and illustrations of the Brandywine Valley. It contains the largest collection of original art-work by N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and James Wyeth.

Witherthur Museum and Gardens — An authentic American country estate designed in the tradition of an 18th/19th-century European country house. Includes large collections of antiques, fields and farmland depicting the workings of a country estate, and a 60-acre garden. For the young, there is Winterthur's famous fairy-tale children's garden, Enchanted Woods, and a Touch-It Room.

The American Helicopter Museum & Education Center — The nation's premier aviation museum devoted exclusively to helicopters. Exhibitions and collections include more than 35 helicopters, autogiros, and convertiplanes -- eight of which are fully accessible for hands-on experiences.

Natural and Environmental Centers

Longwood Gardens — Offers 11,000 different types of plants on more than 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. Includes 20 outdoor gardens, 20 indoor gardens within 4 acres of heated greenhouses, and spectacular fountains.

Ridley Creek State Park — Slip off to tramp along the more than 12 miles of hiking trails, or walk the 5-mile paved multi-use trail, through varied habitats representative of southeastern Pennsylvania. Also within the Park is an 18th century working farm where you will find authentically clothed interpreters as they go about their daily chores of cooking, preserving, sewing and tending to crops and farm animals typical of the time period.

Tyler Arboretum — One of the oldest and largest arboretums in the northeastern Unites States, it encompasses 650 acres of informal gardens and educational displays. Try your luck at tree identification on some of the more rare specimens and historical trees.

Shopping

QVC Studio Park — QVC (Quality/Value/Convenience) is the world's most famous electronic retailer and offers special online tours of its studios. You can see behind the scenes as the staff works together to make a fun, fast, and easy shopping experience. Also has a retail and gift shop on-site.

King of Prussia Mall — The largest mall on the east coast and one of the largest in America, King of Prussia Mall offers varied shopping and dining in a 2-story, 2-building complex of 8 major department stores, almost 400 hundred specialty shops, and 40 eating establishments.

Local Flavor

West Chester —- In 2001, The Philadelphia Inquirer called West Chester "one of the world's most perfect small towns." Enjoy browsing the antique shops and strolling along the quaint city streets of Sharpless Square in downtown West Chester, or visit the Clydn Center for Performing Arts and the Military Relic Museum.

Media — Billed as "Everybody's Hometown," Media is the last suburban town in America that still has an operating trolley running along its main street. It was built from the ground up specifically as a county seat and a planned community. Located at the highest point in Delaware County, the streets spread out along cardinal directions from the centrally-located courthouse.

Chadds Ford Winery — Acknowledged as one of the top east coast wineries, Chadds Ford Winery produces 30,000 cases of wine a year and sells it to a wide market from New York to Washington, D.C., and at selected restaurants nationwide. Tour this small premium winery and taste the dry white, dry red, and springtime sweet wines produced from a special micro-climate in a country atmosphere.

Specialized Dining

Dilworthtown Inn — Dilworthtown Historic District is listed as one of the sites significant to American history and culture. It was once called "Devil's Half-Acre" because it "furnished more drunken men, more fights and disturbances, than any locality of the like size in twenty miles." Fortunately, that reputation has dissipated due in no small part to the heavily-featured Dilworthtown Inn, where you can step back in time for a luxurious meal of formal dining replete with candlelight and a crackling fire, all in a colonial setting -- serving fine wine now in the place of bad whiskey.

General Warren Inn — An authentically restored 18th century inn where you can enjoy fine continental cuisine with table-side preparation at candle-lit tables, surrounded by old-world charm. It is located on what used to be the main highway between Philadelphia and Lancaster and was a popular stopping place for lodging, food, and spirits. Its history is long and colorful. On one night in 1777, the British captured a local blacksmith and tortured him on the third floor of the inn in order to find out where General "Mad" Anthony Wayne was camped ... which led to Battle of Paoli. The ghost of a revolutionary soldier has presumably been seen here often, and the ghost of a civilian man reportedly walks around the bar blowing on women’s necks.

Jimmy John's Pipin' Hot Sandwiches — A local institution in existence for over 65 years serving old-fashioned hot dogs with electric train displays designed especially for the young and young at heart.

The Rat Bar — Advertised as the hottest dance club in West Chester, offering the area's best bands, DJ's, and MC's. Arguably the new "Devil's Half-Acre."

Institutions of Higher Learning

University of Pennsylvania — Recognized as America's first university, Penn remains a world-renowned center for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. It serves as a model for research colleges and universities throughout the world. Penn's innovative approach to education began with Benjamin Franklin who founded the university that, unlike other American Colonial colleges, would not focus on education for the clergy but would prepare students for lives of business and public service. The proposed program of study became the nation's first modern liberal arts curriculum, and the University's vision continues to blaze trails in education.

Drexel University — Drexel University students are educated specifically to live and work successfully in a technological world. In 2005, Drexel University joined the ranks of the University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, Lehigh, Penn State, and the University of Pittsburg as the only Pennsylvania institutions of higher education with the best national doctoral programs, as ranked by US News & World Reports. The University's co-op program was also ranked among the nation's best.

West Chester University of Pennsylvania — The second largest of 14 institutions that compose the State System of Higher Education for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The goal of WCU is quality education at a reasonable price.

Cheyney University — America's oldest historically black institution of higher learning, Cheyney University students today represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities and is part of the 14-university State System of Higher Education.

Swarthmore College — One of the finest liberal arts schools in the country, Swarthmore College prepares students for full, balanced lives and effective citizenship through rigorous academic study emphasizing social responsibility. True to its Quaker heritage, Swarthmore maintains a strong commitment to community service.

Widner University — Founded in 1821, Widener University is a multi-campus, independent, metropolitan university providing a combination of liberal arts and professional education through eight schools and colleges.

Regional Attractions (a longer drive, but worth the trip)

Philadelphia (approx. 1/2 hour to the east) — Called variously the "City of Neighborhoods" and the "American Paris," Philadelphia is full of fun and adventure. Its downtown entertainment industries, quaint city shops, small dining establishments, extensive cultural activities, health and education facilities, and historical background make it one of the most visited cities in the United States. If you want to visit Philadelphia rather than spend your time in the "burbs," the possibilities are limitless, including: the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, the National Constitution Center, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute Science Museum, the African American Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Seaport Museum, the Philadelphia Zoo, the New Jersey State Aquarium (Camden), the Philadelphia Insectarium, Ride the Ducks, the Reading Terminal Market ... or just take a carriage ride around the downtown area.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country (approx. 1 hour to the west) — the center of one of the oldest communities of Old Order Amish, located in the heart of Lancaster County, offers a glimpse into America's past. Unique shops feature period antiques, home-made quilts, indoor and outdoor furniture manufactured meticulously by hand, and even horse shoes. Small towns with unusual names like Bird-in-Hand, Paradise, and Intercourse dot the rolling Pennsylvania farmland. Local produce markets, wooden covered bridges, and the sight of farm equipment pulled by mule teams are the hallmark of Lancaster County. Here you can taste real home-made whoopie pies, shoo-fly pies, and funnel cakes from the area where they were fist made. Then finish off your visit with a ride on the Strasburg Railroad before heading back to the 21st century.

The Jersey Shore (approx. 1-1/2 hours or more to the east) — If you're from the Philadelphia area, at some point in your life you have undoubtedly traveled "Down the Shore." From the glitter of Atlantic City to the small family-town ambiance of Ocean City, New Jersey seashore communities offer a wide range of experiences along sunny beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Communities with names like Avalon, Sandy Hook, Sea Isle City, Seaside Heights, Ship Bottom, and Stone Harbor offer the finest in beach relaxation. Boardwalks in Asbury Park (where you might catch Bruce Springsteen singing at the Stone Pony), Atlantic City, Ocean City, and the Wildwoods provide fun for both kids and adults alike. Historic Cape May is a shoppers paradise, with a ferry across the mouth of the Delaware River to attractive Delaware shore points of Lewes and Rehobeth. And for the outdoors-minded, the Brigantine National Wildlife Preserve provides some of the finest examples of shoreline habitat on the east coast.

The Poconos (approx. 1-1/2 hours or more to the north) — Pennsylvania's year-round vacation wonderland. Any type of outdoor recreation can be found in the picturesque Pocono Mountains, from skiing and snowboarding in the winter to hiking, camping, horseback riding, swimming, and fishing in the summer. The fall foliage season is spectacular with blazing oranges and reds reflecting from mountain-side maples. With 7 state parks, 72,000 acres of state forest land, and the 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, it is the perfect play land for those who love the outdoors. The Poconos is also home to Grey Towers, the estate of Gifford Pinchot who was the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, located at Milford.

Hershey (approx. 1-1/2 hours to the west) — Called the "Sweetest Place On Earth," Hershey is home to Hershey Foods, Inc., but today its more than just a community that grew up around a chocolate factory. It contains an amusement park of more than 60 rides, an 11-acre zoo, museums, gardens, shopping, resorts, and dining facilities. Of course, its impossible to avoid Hershey's Chocolate World Tour of their facility to find out how chocolate is made.

Gettysburg (approx. 2 hours to the west) — The site of the largest, and bloodiest, land battle ever fought on the North American continent. It commemorates the 51,000 American soldiers, North and South, who died during the three-day battle in July, 1863. It is the oldest National Military Park, dedicated in 1895, and today remains the most heavily monumented with over 1,400 monuments and 26 miles of park roads on which to discover the 6,000-acre battlefield. Nearly 2 million visitors come to the Park every year to visit what has been called "The High Water Mark of the Confederacy."

Baltimore Inner Harbor (approx. 2 hours to the south) — One of America's oldest seaports, the inner harbor of Baltimore offers and eclectic mix of shopping, dining, recreation, and history. From the urban markets at Light Street and Pratt Street to the 4-story glass-enclosed Gallery at Harborplace, it is a self-contained shoppers paradise. Climb aboard the USS Constellation, the last Civil War battleship still afloat and last all-sail vessel, and at the Baltimore Maritime Museum you can see a submarine, cutter, lightship, and knoll lighthouse. One of the most popular attractions in the Inner Harbor is the National Aquarium which features regularly-scheduled dolphin shows. Nearby is Camden Yards (home to the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens), the Babe Ruth Museum, and Fort McHenry -- the birthplace of our national anthem.
