Research Interests

I have been involved in long-term silvicultural research on the Penobscot Experimental Forest (PEF) since 1994. My primary area of study is mixed-species silviculture, with an emphasis on the uneven-aged (selection) system and the northern conifer (Acadian) forest.

Current Research

Michael Rains and Laura Kenefic Recent and ongoing projects on the PEF include leaf area volume growth relationships, impacts of exploitative cutting, uneven-aged stand dynamics, regeneration patterns, eastern hemlock ecology and management, and effects of silvicultural treatment on understory plant species (focusing on nonnative invasive plants). I am also directing or co-directing a number of studies elsewhere in Maine, including rehabilitation of degraded northern hardwood stands, northern white-cedar ecology and management, and effects of harvesting on long-term site productivity (all in cooperation with forest industry), as well as an investigation of structure and growth of mixed northern red oak eastern white pine stands on the Massabesic Experimental Forest. Principal collaborators from other institutions include William Livingston, Robert Seymour and Ivan Fernandez ( University of Maine ), Jean-Claude Ruel ( Laval University ), and Ralph Nyland (SUNY CESF).
