FOREGEN is a simulator that models the regeneration of openings in northern hardwood stands varying in size from 2,000x2,000-foot clearcuts down to single-tree openings of 25x25 feet. The process includes and is based on the random effects related to seed development, dispersal, germination, seedbed conditions, advanced regeneration and climate. The user may specify options on stand age, species composition, size-of opening, winter versus summer harvesting, mechanical scarification, seed trees, advanced regeneration, and red maple stump treatment. The output is species composition of the established regeneration at 3 years after harvest. Although variation is high due to the stochastic elements incorporated into the model, the simulator produces realistic results, in line with expectations on regeneration of the northern hardwood forest. Simulated output may provide help in assessing regeneration options, input into growth simulators, and as educational tools.
The current version of FOREGEN, is now available for download from our web site! FOREGEN is in the public domain and was developed on official US Government time.

The above files are self-extracting, fully functional copies of the foregen programs. Save your choice of files to your hard drive into a foregen directory. After it is downloaded, execute the file and the program files will be on your machine in that directory. You can copy the contents of the directory to a high density floppy diskette and can then use the install program included with this package to load FOREGEN on any IBM compatible computer running MS-DOS or Windows95/98/NT. Making a diskette is a good idea for multiple computer installation and for a backup copy of the program files. You can view the install.txt file included in the downloaded materials for further instructions.
