COLE is a collaborative project between the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc. and the USDA Forest Service Research Work Unit 4104, with major start-up funding through a research grant by USDA Forest Service, Forest Health Monitoring. It is an effort to make FIA (Forest Inventory Analysis) Data easily accessible through a graphical analysis tool. More importantly, COLE should allow the user to harness that data, and use it in a number of complex queries involving estimates of sequestered carbon. COLE is implemented using a JAVA applet/servlet interface in conjunction with the FIA database. This cross-platform design allows COLE to be used on all types of machines, by all types of users. Furthermore, the functionality of the servlet interface allows many of the complex carbon computations to be performed server-side, so that your local machine will not be bogged down in the computations.
