Research Focus

Carbon storage and flux between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere for all forested ecosystems of the United States under an array of changing atmospheric and socioeconomic conditions. I am Project Leader of Research Work Unit NE-4104, responsible for general project research direction and supervision of project personnel.

• Updating the national-level forest carbon budget model FORCARB
• Working as the Criteria 5 lead for the USFS effort in estimating Montreal Process Criteria & Indicators of sustainability
• Estimating carbon in coarse woody debris in forests of the northeastern U.S.A.
• Contributing to the development of an interactive web-based geographic system to produce carbon estimates from annualized USDA Forest Service, Forest Inventory & Analysis data.

Significant consultations and reports

1994-2006. Primary source of the forest carbon budget estimates and contribute text for the land-use change and forestry sector for the US Environmental Protection Agency's annual Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-20XX. This annual inventory is used to monitor and track the progress of the U.S. meeting its commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. 2001-2003. Criterion Lead and primary author for Criterion 5 (carbon cycle) for the 2003 National Report on Sustainable Forests. This report is an interagency effort of the Federal Government of the U.S. in response to the continuing Montreal Process (www.mpci.org) on Criteria and Indicators for the Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests. 1999-2001. Provide forest carbon estimates and projections to the US Government, technical advice, and reports. In 1999, wrote the report "The Effect of Kyoto Protocol Alternatives on Estimates of U.S. Forest Carbon Flux", at the request of a Federal interagency team, including the US Department of Energy, and the US State Department. Contributed to the US Submission on Land-Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry, August 1, 2000.

Member of U.S. State Department delegation to the 13th meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Lyon, France. Invited as expert to give presentation on accounting for carbon in U.S. forests, and provide technical advice.

1998. Invited to participate in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Expert Workshop on Land Use Change and Forestry: Carbon in Harvested Wood Products, 5-7 May, 1998, Dakar, Senegal.
