SURVEYORS LOOKOUT


Location: 106 miles SE of St. Maries, ID near Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area

Attractions: Surveyors Lookout is perched at 6000’ elevation on top of Surveyors Ridge. This 30 foot tower overlooks the spectacular Mallard-Larkins Pioneer Area, Snow Peak and the surrounding mountains. Snow Peak, Middle Sister and Mallard Peak Lookouts are still standing and can be seen from Surveyors.

Capacity: 4 maximum

Altitude: 6000’

Remarks: Access via a rugged single-lane road with pullouts. Not recommended for low clearance vehicles. Road may be slick when wet.

Facilities: Furnishings include propane refrigerator, cook stove, heater and lights; one twin bed with mattress, one extra mattress; one cabinet/chest with a few drawers; table, bench and chairs. There is an outhouse located near the lookout. A spring is located along the road approximately 1.4 miles away. Treat or boil all water before drinking.

History: The original pole structure lookout was built in 1931 and was part of a network of Lookouts used to watch for fires in the Upper St. Joe Country. The original lookout was replaced with the current treated timber lookout in 1964. Surveyors is on the National Historic Register for Lookouts.
