SANDPOINT RANGER DISTRICT TRAILS OVERVIEW
With more than 75 trails, the Sandpoint Ranger District offers over 270 miles of developed routes for hiking, horseback riding, mountain bike riding, motorbike and ATV riding. The trail sytem offers opportunities for all types of walking and riding recreation from short day trips to a mountain lake or to extended backpacking and horsepacking trips.
Terrain on the Sandpoint Ranger District district ranges from lakeside of Lake Pend Oreille at an elevation of 2062 feet to a subalpine environment as high as 7352 feet in the Selkirk Range. Valley bottoms, dense forests, brush fields, meadows, and occasional clearings and barren ridges are mixed with streams, rivers, and lakes. This variety of terrain and environment offers hikers a chance to study nature, to look for rocks or identify plants or wildlife, or just hike to a high ridge for a magnificent panorama of the area.
The lower elevation trails are usually snow free by mid-June, while the high mountain trails may have pockets of snow well into July. Use is varied among the trails. Many of the trails are designated unrestricted use trails, meaning they are open to off-road vehicles as well as backpackers and horseback riders. There are other trails, however, that are open only to hikers. Some trails receive heavy use during the summer months while others receive only limited use throughout the year.
