How to Make a FOIA or Privacy Act Request

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy Act (PA), and USDA regulations at 7 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), any person can request access to Forest Service (FS) records.

Requests should be made in writing by contacting Forest Service FOIA Coordinators in the area where the records reside. Requests may be sent by mail, fax, or e-mail (also, later, through the web.) Include a mailing address to which releaseable hard copy records can be sent.

Agencies are authorized to collect fees for searching, reviewing, and copying records. If access to records is denied, either in part or in full, under any of the exemptions, or if a request for a fee waiver is denied, a requester has the right to appeal.
