Coconino National Forest policy for use for temporary signs is to inform and serve the public users, assure uniformity, conformance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and provide for the Forest's immediate needs of short duration. Colors and designs will blend and fit with standard Forest Service signs. Approval by appropriate SO Staff is required for the wording on all temporary signs. 1. Item S-22. Temporary guide and information signs shall be constructed in accordance with Forest Service Handbook 7109.11b, Signs, Chapter 10. Background color shall be Forest Service brown (Dupont Automotive Enamel, Color #93-72899, Federal Color Chip No. 20059). Letters or symbols shall be cream-yellow enamel (Dupont Automotive Color #93-1157, Federal Color Chip No. 23695) or a CO- or NSPC-approved equivalent. Symbol or letter height shall be not less than 3 inches and best fit the plate used for maximum legibility and appearance. Messages shall be brief and easily understood. 2. Item S-23. Warning signs shall be diamond-shaped (square with one diagonal in the vertical position). Hazard or warning signs shall have a fully reflectorized yellow background with a black symbol or message and border. Symbol or letter height shall be not less than 3 inches and test fit the plate used for maximum legibility and appearance. If other warnings are needed, temporary or otherwise, signs on the Coconino National Forest shall meet Forest Service standards. Legends shall be brief and easily understood. Signs shall be put up as soon as a need arises and taken down immediately after the need is gone. The District road coordinators shall be responsible for timely erection and removal on their respective Districts. Signs placed on tripods shall be placed at least 2 feet and not more than 6 feet from the edge of travelway and the bottom of the sign not less than 4 feet above road surface. Warning signs shall be square, not less than 30 inches or more than 36 inches on a side. Sequence signs shall be spaced between 50 and 100 feet apart as location will permit. FSM TITLE 7100 - ENGINEERING OPERATIONS Examples: In the case of a controlled burn, a sequence of temporary signs or a single sign could be used whichever is most economical and adequate, such as: See the Paper copy of Master Set for 7161.2 Exhibit 1. See the Paper copy of Master Set for 7161.2 Exhibit 2. Although these signs are long-lasting, they are considered to be temporary because of their short duration at any needed location.
