Four Rivers Lottery application closed February 1, 2010.

The Four Rivers Lottery application period is now closed. The application period was December 1 through January 31. Email notices will be sent to all applicants with the results of their application – successful or unsuccessful – beginning February 4th. Applicants will be able to check their profile to see the details of their lottery results beginning February 4 th.

CONFIRMATION DEADLINE is MARCH 15, 2010 for all successful lottery applicants! To confirm your reservation, log into your profile and accept your reservation by March 15 th. Successful applicants will no longer receive a paper packet of confirmation materials. Boaters will need to access the respective river’s information webpage for details about equipment requirements, regulations and trip information. The website will be listed on the confirmation letter that will be emailed once the reservation is confirmed.

Unconfirmed reservations, unassigned lottery dates, and control season cancellations will be released at an undisclosed time beginning on March 16 th. To check for available launch dates, visit www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-550-6777.

Boating Permits and Regulations

  • Permits are required year-round for all non-commercial floaters and powerboaters on the Snake River within the HCNRA. Take time to read the regulations printed on the back of the permit before embarking on your trip.
  • During the primary river season, reservations and trip permits issued by the Forest Service are required to launch trips at specific locations along the river. For information on powerboat or float permits and reservations, call the appropriate river information/reservation number listed here:

  • Visit the Four Rivers Lottery website for obtaining non-commercial float permits for the Snake-Hells Canyon, Main Salmon, Middle Fork of the Salmon, and the Selway Rivers.
  • A special use permit issued by the Forest Service is required for outfitting and guiding of all commercial float and powerboat trips within the boundaries of the HCNRA. Any of the HCNRA offices can provide you with a list of outfitters who are permitted to operate in Hells Canyon NRA. Rewards of up to $500 are offered for information leading to convictions for commercial outfitting or guiding without a permit.
