Baldy Lake Trail #69

TRAIL BEGINNING: At its junction with the Seven Devils Trail, approximately 4.5 miles south of Hibbs Cow Camp

TRAIL ENDING: Baldy Lake

ACCESS:

From Riggins, take State Highway 95 south one mile to the Seven Devils Road, Forest Road #517. This is a steep one lane gravel road with turnouts, and is fairly rough for the last few miles. Although adequate for most passenger cars, it is not recommended for RVs or travel trailers. It is generally open from early July to mid October. It is 17 miles to Windy Saddle Trailhead and generally takes one hour.

Windy Saddle Trailhead provides adequate parking and stock facilities for Wilderness travelers. Overnight camping facilities are also available on site, and stock water is available 1/4 mile down the Seven Devils Trail.

From Windy Saddle Trailhead, follow the Seven Devils Trail #124 for 10.5 miles to the intersection with the Baldy Lake Trail. (This intersection is also located approximately 5 miles north of the junction of the Boise Trail #101 and the Seven Devils Trail # 124 near Horse Heaven).

ATTRACTIONS:

It is one mile on the Baldy Lake Trail #69 to its end at Baldy Lake. Plan on spending two days to access Baldy Lake, unless you are in top physical condition. Baldy Lake is a large lake and is nestled in at the bases of Mount Belial, Devils Throne, and the Twin Imps. The hike in provides many scenic views of the Oregon Rim of Hells Canyon and
the Little Granite Creek drainage. Past fire activity around the lake is evident by changes in the vegetation age and type. Cutthroat and Rainbow trout can be seen swimming by the large basalt rocks that line the lakeshore.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Although Baldy Lake is one of the larger lakes in Hells Canyon Wilderness, camping opportunities are limited to two areas at the west side of the lake. Grazing opportunities at this lake are non-existant. The only drinking water available in the area is from the lake, so make sure you treat it before drinking. This trail was relocated in the early 1990's, so many other map locations are incorrect. The current location is approximately 3/4 mile south of the old location.

Length: 1 mile

Elevation: Trail beginning 6,880 feet Baldy Lake 7,190 feet
