GENERAL CAREERS OVERVIEW
Natural Resource Specialist
What do I most look forward to on my way to work? Washington traffic. Just kidding. I really look forward to finding solutions to balance the long-term and short-term needs of society. I look forward to contributing to the preservation of our natural resources.
I currently work on program and budget analysis in the Forest Service's Washington office. I help formulate the agency's budget and submit budget requests to the Department of Agriculture and Congress. On a day-to-day basis, I track the progress of long-term projects and work with different staffs to complete action items. I also get the added perk of getting to travel for various projects.
I gained field experience in graduate school with the Forest Service's Student Career Experience Program. Working in a forest, I definitely felt more connected to the land. My work mattered, but all of the issues I dealt with were very small in scale. In the Washington office, I work on big issues. My work makes the whole agency more effective. Here, I have the opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale.
