ZigZag Interagency Hotshot Crew

The ZigZag Interagency Hotshot Crew is located on the Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon. We are a group of 20 highly motivated and physically fit individuals who, in essence, forgo all other activities during the fire season in order to respond to any all-risk incidents that we are needed for throughout the United States and sometimes beyond. An average fire season for us entails 80 to 120+ days away from the station over a 4-5 month period. We generally stay somewhere in the Western United States but have been known to go as far as Alaska, the Eastern United States and Canada.

We pride ourselves on a strong work ethic where we rise to the occasion and go above and beyond the regular "call of duty" to get the assignment completed quickly, efficiently and safely. This may require long shifts - some in excess of 30 hours. Hotshoting is not a glamorous job. There is no glory. It is hard, dirty, physical labor in extremely remote and inaccessible areas. The pride we feel comes from the knowledge of a job well done and a complex assignment completed safely. If we can’t do it, then it probably cannot be done because Interagency Hotshot Crews are the best crews in the nation.

Cooperation and teamwork is what puts a fire out. We believe in helping other crews. Being supportive and having a good attitude is a key part of this job. We are all expected to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Part of being a "Hotshot" is acting like one. Self-motivation, working hard and pushing yourself mentally and physically are qualities needed to be a ZigZag Hotshot. It is not an easy job. It never has been and it never will be.

"This isn't a job, it's a lifestyle."
