FEPP Success Stories -Federated States of Micronesia, Yap State
Federated States of Micronesia, Yap StateIt took 2 years to work out, but the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap State finally received a surplus Forest Service engine. Yap is an area in Micronesia that has a growing wildland fire problem, usually associated with draught conditions. As more remote islanders relocate to urban areas the frequency of vegetation fire has increased due to new residents being unaware of the high fire danger near Colonia that doesn't exist on their home islands. Traditional farm and garden burning is easily accomplished during these dry times and the fire department is working hard to educate the new residents about safe burning. As quoted by Trudie Mahoney, USDA Forest Service Program Manager, "This is why I come to work every day - FEPP is always a win-win." ***************************** Contact your state State Forester with questions or comments concerning the FEPP program.
