The equipment needs of many rural fire departments far excceed the cash available. However, MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Excess Property Program is doing what it can to remedy this problem. Through collaboration with the Department of Defense, the DNR has been able to acquire a wide range of equipment to allocate to fire departments throughout Minnesota. This new Firefighter Property (FFP) program is in its sixth year and has supplied volunteer fire departments with a wide range of products; from screw drivers, stop blocks, and safety equipment to trucks, tanks and trailers and everything in between. The Hitterdal Volunteer Fire Department was in need of a heavy duty truck that could be modified to accomodate a long bed and be used in a variety of emergency situations, with a protection area of 72 square miles, the 2000 gallon tanker shown below is now their primary water tender.
Through the FFP program, the needs of many are now being met.
