FIREMAPPER

Requirements: Standard FS Core data and structure, AIX on FS IBM Server

Is a point and click Arc/Info map-making application for Incident support, it follows Forest Service National Core Data Standards as well as USGS and Fireline Handbook symbology standards.

DRG's (Digital Raster Graphic) and DOQ's (Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle) are supported within an image catalog or as standalone. Note that DRG's are used when corporate coverages are not available or do not meet data standards.

It offers one button composition of 6 standard ICS products. It also has a heads-up digitizing module which fires up. In addition there is a button to plot existing maps and FIREMAPPER completely integrates the custom map-maker application, OCHMAP.

FIREMAPPER installs in minutes, but the data needs are very strict (as per national standards) and data conversion may take more time. The optional OCHMAP customization will take a half day.
Some highlights are:

* It plots at 11"x17" or 36"x48" with additional 1/4" or 1/2" size options.
* It will place locational grids over the outputs.
* It will use DOQ's or DRG's if you have them, or substitue DRG's for the required data sets.

Topo!

Requirements: See web site

Topo is a very user-friendly map maker sold by National Geographic.  It is sold on a state by state basis for about $90 each (for up to 11 CD’s).  It features five scales displayed in 3D relief, GPS snail trailing, heads-up digitizing and a very easy printing interface.  On the downside, it will not export to ArcView and you need the freeware TrackMaker to capture the collected GPS data.  Examples are at http://www.topo.com .

TrackMaker

Requirements: See web site

TrackMaker is freeware to produce information out of your GPS files.  http://www.gpstm.com/

Ventura Tools

Requirements: PC with Windows® 96,97,2000, NT

The Ventura Tools are a set of GIS tools geared for fire incident mapping.  They were developed by the Ventura County Fire Department’s Mapping Services Section in the late 90’s by Jim Kniss and Don Taylor, and have been continually updated and improved.  In 1999, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) assisted in the creation of additional tools to manipulate CDF data.

The Ventura Tools allow the GIS Technician to perform a multitude of GIS operations including the following:

·       Create and label division and branch breaks on fire perimeter.

·       Create ICS point symbols.

·       Assign ICS fire line symbology to fire perimeter.

·       Generate reports containing acreage, fire perimeter and fire line length.

·       Custom tools to edit polyline features.

·       Utilities to import GPS data in several formats.

·       Utilities to convert and reproject various GIS data formats.

·       Contains custom map layouts commonly used on incidents.

·       Contains custom tools for layout documents.

·       Custom extension to create point features based on user-entered coordinates.  Also creates map layout.

·       Includes many other custom tools.

IncMapTools 2.2

Requirements: Unknown

The Incident Mapping Tools (version 2.2) extension compiles the work of many authors into one extension.  These tools will assist you in many common tasks performed on incidents and in your daily job.  Make sure you read the help line at the bottom of the screen if you are not sure how the tools work.  It may help you.

Incident Mapping Tools ver. 1.5 extension

Requirements: Unknown

Large incidents may require the creation of multiple page IAP maps in order to maintain a 1:24,000 map scale for the entire incident.  The IAP Map Tool and associated instructions will allow you to create an Arcview map layout, which can contain up to 10 11x17 map pages.

Fugawi

Requirements: See Web Page

Fugawi Moving Map software - also known as NavGear in the version marketed by RMMCADD - interfaces easily with the three major brands of handheld GPS receivers (Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan), and provides the field user with many handy utilities. It is made by Northport Systems (Canada), and marketed by several U.S. Firms. Retail price is $95, but is deeply discounted to volume buyers.

Fugawi imports and displays DRG maps from most sources, including the seamless ChartTiffs. If the GPS receiver is connected to the PC and has a satellite fix, Fugawi will show the user's current location on the map. As the user moves, so does the indicator, and if the user moves off the map, Fugawi will automatically load the adjacent map, if the map file is in Fugawi's library.

Fugawi will download and upload waypoint, track, and route data to and from the GPS receiver, and will display this information on the proper map, if the map is loaded. Track data (traverse or perimeter positions) can be edited and analyzed in several different ways, including an acreage calculation that compares well with the ArcInfo calculation. Fugawi will also export the track data as an ASCII text file that can be imported directly into either ArcInfo or ArcView (via Tables) to build an Arc coverage or an ArcView shape file.

Fugawi will print the current map on the screen, complete with displayed waypoints, tracks, routes, and the user's annotations, and allows for cropping before printing. The print routine prints the selected portion of the displayed map to the size of paper loaded into the printer, but does not allow the user to select the map scale to print. The bigger the paper, the bigger the map.

Check further with Fugawi's web site at http://www.fugawi.com , or the BIA's National GPS page at http://fire.nifc.nps.gov/bia/training/maps/biagps.html , and click the picture of the eTrex GPS receiver.

Or check with your friendly BIA GPS Coordinator for a personal demonstration

Ozi Explorer

Software which will work with Magellan, Garmin, Lowrance, Eagle and MLR GPS receivers for the upload/download of data and most brands of GPS receivers for on screen tracking of position (Moving Map). For more information and the current software download go to : http://www.oziexplorer.com/ or click here for a cached version of OZI Explorer

X Tools - read about X Tools

In the interest of NOT re-inventing the wheel independently, and for your
working pleasure. X Tools is a "utility" for use in ArcView OR ArcGIS. Xtools.zip is the original; an AV Extension for use in ArcView 3.x. It can be used in Unix as well as on a PC. It has been around for years, is very stable, and generally very useful. It is recommended you only load one Xtools. If you use ArcView 3.x, unzip xtools.zip and move it to the AV extension area. Note there will also be a PDF file called XtoolsDoc.pdf - it is the documentation for Xtools.

If you use ArcGIS you need to INSTALL Xtools30.zip; it is Xtools rewritten (by a couple of Russian programers) for use in ArcGIS.
Note also that Xtools30 is INSTALLED: Whatever you do: You must be careful to use only ONE of them. Unfortunately, they CANNOT both be used safely at the same time.
