Data Standards

The Forest Service Fire and Aviation Management Staff recognizes the benefits of standard geospatial data. There are 2 categories of data standards on this page. As standards are developed they are added to this page as proposed standards to the National FAM Spatial Common Data Dictionary. These standards remain in draft (proposed) until a full review is completed by the field. Approval by the Forest Service National Subject Matter Expert for the standard will be required prior to submission to the NWCG IRMWT. Once the NWCG has adopted the proposed standard it is then eligible to be added to the Forest Service Spatial Data Dictionary.

Each Region of the Forest Service is very unique not only in it's location but in it's needs for spatial data. Many Regions maintain their own data dictionary for data collected at the forest and district level.
